Abstract:
Against the broader backdrop of the continued implementation of the Healthy China initiative and the global revival of traditional medicine, academic journals of Chinese medicine (TCM) serve not only as important platforms for knowledge dissemination and research advancement, but also as key hubs for supporting industrial innovation and developing an academic discourse system for TCM with Chinese characteristics. Nevertheless, newly established TCM journals, particularly start-up journals focusing on specialized fields, commonly face the dual structural challenges of limited room for survival and insufficient momentum for development. In view of these challenges, this paper extends its scope beyond a single case to newly established TCM journals as a whole, while taking the Journal of Food and Medicine Homology as a representative case. It systematically examines the common difficulties confronting these journals, including barriers to resource acquisition arising from the Matthew effect, unclear journal positioning and underdeveloped peer-review mechanisms resulting from interdisciplinary characteristics, limited effectiveness of digital communication, and discontinuities in the translation chain linking industry, academia, and research. Adopting a problem-oriented approach, this paper proposes a systematic development framework applicable to newly established TCM journals. First, it recommends pursuing a content development strategy centered on specialization and high quality and establishing an interdisciplinary intelligent peer-review platform to improve the academic evaluation system. Second, it identifies and promotes the successful experience of the Journal of Food and Medicine Homology, including establishing a young editorial board to broaden its manuscript submission network and leveraging high-level academic conferences to enhance its academic influence and brand recognition. Finally, it advocates developing an integrated omnimedia communication matrix and strengthening a collaborative innovation ecosystem encompassing industry, academia, research, and application. By drawing broader insights from an individual case, this paper aims to provide a solid theoretical foundation and feasible practical approaches for newly established TCM journals to overcome developmental bottlenecks, thereby enhancing the overall competitiveness and international academic voice of TCM publishing in China.
